WHAT IS ORGANIC?

There are a number of definitions for biological agriculture. The most acclaimed and widely accepted definition is offered by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM: “biological agriculture is an overall production system that relies on processes that sustain ecosystems, promote food security, humane treatment of animals and social justice”.

Codex Alimentarius /Food Law or Code/ defines organic agriculture as “holistic production management systems which promote and enhance agroecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles, and soil biological activity”. Organic production systems are based on specific and precise standards of production which aim at achieving optimal agroecosystems which are socially and ecologically sustainable.

Products defined as organic are produced in accordance with organic standards for manufacturing, transportation, processing and marketing and are certified by certifying bodies. Organic foods can be defined as products of a system that avoids use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators and forage additives. >> Continue
